Newmarket "Stage of Hope" for New Messages, Music, and Productions

I wrote a blog already covering the poverty and politics side of the recent Riverwalk Commons held International Day for The Eradication of Poverty event held in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. It touched on the arts side of the York Region version of the Internationally marked day, but did not dwell enough perhaps on the arts side was my thought so I've put this one together.

Each year, as the event has evolved, we have slowly added more arts to the days planned itinerary and to that end for 2014 we emphasized youth and added more hip hop and spoken word to the mix which all melded to the theme in a very cool package, acting as the nights end with various acts taking to the stage in succession, highlighted by a song from Maurice Weeks and Justin Harris / AFM Fam JustFlow's track Politics. Very fitting, and really added another notch vibe to an already vibe engorged outdoor event. Some mainstream media coverage was welcome as well.

With Opening acts ranging from a Richmond Hill youth group's stage version of Stone Soup, that included a man returning from Afghanistan with post stress syndrome, to a 40 minute set by the unbelievable The Yappers (anybody seen their stage sign? Lol ) who kicked out some rockin' slash country at times slash always reggae based tunes to the delight of some attendees who felt suddenly inspired to dance and sway to their dynamic original sound. Leader / Composer Ray Yap from Aurora, fronting wacky Bassist Stew Sparks, and Drum sensation, Laney V, slashed out a mid-song solo, after jumping into the crowd, his wireless guitar seemingly leading him to reach his intense crescendo before returning to the stage in time to end the song with his mates. Small things, but stage time has obviously worked well with the band and I think they played with inflamed passion as well, without which, there is no "music' to me.

The Yappers perform at Riverwalk Commons Stage
The Open Stage also heard a touch of Elvis, helped on by yours truly, with an enthusiastic, but not too sure of the words accomplice, who wanted to sing - but hey like anyone he was welcome to give what he could and in that way, it too was an entertaining moment.

" I'm wea-ring Black, Because their's nothing Dar-ker" The Yappers

The last part of the Int day event was reserved for Hip Hop Performers and Spoken Word Artists. If you look at the history of the roots of hip hop music you don't have to look too far to find a connection to poverty in some way...or the results of it...and our life choices we make...and that all comes out in hip hop something I discovered over the past number of years whilst having been immersed in the entertainment industry. The 1st inkling I got was when I saw seniors up and dancing to hip hop - then I knew it was a market and some. Looking further, one discovers that the real top hop if you will, is rooted in personal experiences, or perceptions of those experiences, and then relayed out through the spoken word on stage or in some cases as with the Arthur Jr Music Family and JustFlow are prone to do, crossed with R&B music to add a whole other dimension - such as the perfectly themed and slickly performed at the event, Politics.

JustFlow's Justin Harris
Maurice and Justin thrust out the beats with more vigour than I've seen from them in some time, which seemed to draw the remaining and enthusiastic crowd closer in, almost as if to get some of that music magic dust to rub off on them. The guys brought them to threshold before relenting the stage to some of the walk-on talent which too was splashed with intense participation, from the unique mind bending antics of Spence, a local Newmarket talent who stood out, as well as up and coming talents including a female MC / Hip Hop Artist - Dean Wild of Stay Blessed Productions.

With a few pumpkin smashed being the only casualties of the evening's events, and the seemingly unanimous vibe by all attendees including the earlier-set folk, that this was an inspiring event to make music and noise at, and a great fit to showcase ideas, talent, and new work. And I look forward to next years event for which Oct 17 falls on a Saturday, and to perhaps expand the music and arts portion of the event should there be enough interest to.

The event often inspires ideas, and one of which that seems to be grabbing hold of life was an idea of a type of march to draw attention to the lives of those with disabilities and on low income in York Region to be called Walk & Roll which would roll out sometime in the spring of 2015 and would encompass having a march from York Region headquarters, to the Aurora / Newmarket M.P.P. Chris Ballard's office at
Yonge and St John's Side Rd, and could include walkers, wheelchair and scooter users, bike riders, skate boarders - however people get around without transit - and include music, amplified mics and opportunities to sing or rap out as we travel the route. At our destination we would meet with the M.P.P. and ask him to support a motion in parliament to give to raise disability support rates and stop putting the onus on them to find alternative income supports.

" 1%. What do they expect us to do with that? That's $12 to me. 3 bus rides." Dan Philion

The Walk & Roll idea was inspired by Dan Philion, PACC's Vice-Chair and community volunteer award winner, who himself is confined to a wheelchair and has increasingly limited use of his hands. Tired of living in constant worry of having enough food without begging and having to live in isolation without being able to afford to go out, Dan asked was there not something we can do?

Walk & Roll!? Stay Tuned!

DryDance Events No Alcohol Dance GTA

WATCH HERE FOR UPCOMING EVENT INFO

I was so looking forward to the first monthly DryDance Production event on Sat Feb 15 at Stellar Hall and Event Centre in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada - unit 205, second floor above the Stellar Bowl. The 19 +, alcohol free events and dances are targeted towards a more mature crowd with rotating themes and coinciding activities planned to reflect that. There is no alcohol consumption allowed in the hall during any TPE Productions DryDance events.

It was a BLAST! For the opening night we decided to theme the dance as an escape from winter and so sun and tropical -like influences  ruled the evening, although aside from the excellent theme inspired Reggae rooted band, The Yappers, we also offered dj style music with everything from classic rock early on to the latest in dance music and Latin Dance, all pumped out through a clean, surround sound system with dance lights creating the desired effect. The goal is to inspire an exciting atmosphere that allows people to dance, have fun, or socialize and welcomes anyone interested in partaking. As the events grow in size, so too will the bells and whistles and we hope to add atmospheric live entertainment to the earlier part of the evening in future or karaoke as well as perhaps with an early bird supper club menu.

Theme Menus
We'll continue to have draws and wacky contests and give out theme related prizes, as well as offer a theme inspired menu offering quick bite munchies like cajun style fish tacos! Also watch for "virgin" style exotic drinks such as Pinacoladas and fresh fruit and yogurt smoothies too! Mmmm. Use it or lose it!

Not sure how the prizes will be given out each time yet, but certainly the person most dressed in theme will win something! You don't have to dress up but do please put your dancing shoes on! Ha! Hey, and maybe break out some Michael Jackson moon dancing for memory lane!

Stellar Hall is made up of two semi adjoining rooms - the main hall, and a smaller room with area for mingling and to order food and beverages from. There is also long corridor hallway for strolling and an elevator should anyone wish instead of stairs for smoking outside.

The event has a $10 cover charge or $5 in advance  includes entrance to the dance and a chance at door prizes as well as light snacks. Theme menu or Pop or water also available at only $1.50. Advanced Tickets info Stellar @  905-830-9441 or TPE @ 289-221-0928

TP Entertainment & Productions will keep these dances going once a month as long as supported and will continue to add fun add-on activities to the mix - so stay tuned to DryDance Productions - No Ads - Simply Google Search DryDance Newmarket for info and dates each month or No Alcohol Dance.

Ontario's Longest Running Annual Road hockey Tourney in Newmarket

                      Mulock Hawks 2006 Team
Sat March 15 2014 marks the date of the 10th anniversary of the Friendly Neighbourhood Youth Road hockey Challenge. NOTE: 2014 event at 395 Mulock Dr. Town Office parking lot. Registration 10AM. 289-221-0928. All Age groups welcome. Under 12 must be supervised.

The inclusive Newmarket activity event, first started to engage youth, and free to all participants, has become Ontario's longest running annual ball hockey tourney program - coming before any other similar ball hockey models such as the York Region Character group's after-school start up which uses a very similar program description, the St. Margaret's Hospital for Cancer tourney, Oakville's event, Niagara's, Waterloo's, Hamilton's or even the infamous Canada-wide PlayOn 4 on 4 tourney now billing itself as Canada's largest. Even Walter Gretzky's annual in Brampton - all came after ours.

In fact as I recall, while traveling Ontario to various poverty reduction forums and social networking groups on behalf of PACC which took over the event at the time when the community development project ended, explaining excitingly the virtues of road hockey and telling how it was not only a great cause, but a natural  event for marketing as well, being a Canadian "tradition". People asked a lot of questions and wanted know more always it seemed. " It teaches newcomers a Canadian tradition", I'd said. It kept a Canadian traditions alive we wrote. It made kids active and taught responsibility. and on. It was an easy sell. For others too it would seem.

2013 M.T. Award Winner Tyler Gray, 18
Our Challenge format was even borrowed for ice hockey's local Aurora - Newmarket Junior A Team games to incite rivalry and boost attendance shortly after I mentioned it to one of their sponsor's reps - at the time telling him I'd like to see a team from Aurora challenged to play in our tourney - after which exclaimed, "A Challenge, what a great idea!". Two months later they were billing their own as " The Yonge St Challenge" or " Battle of Yonge" or something to that effect as I recall seeing in the papers. We didn't get any sponsorship money, but they did give us some free tickets for the new challenge games to give to some youths. Ha.

Obviously they all saw the value too. No worries, we see it all as a compliment.

First recipient Mike Thornhill Award
When we first started holding the F.N. Youth Road hockey Challenge out of a small mixed-income neighbourhood, we took the model of when we were kids growing up, challenging another team to play, but what we found was times had changed and finding another neighbourhood street hockey team would not be so easy, so we settled on playing against a church youth team that first year.

Over the summer, one of the youths who'd begun coming out to community meetings and volunteering to assist in youth outreach was killed across town outside a local Tim Horton's donut shop. The younger youth in the affected community who had befriended this guy, Mike Thornhill on a path to changing his life, received no grief counseling and so, again, we of the community development committee had a dilemma, and created "the Mike Thornhill Memorial Award , a cash / scholarship donation (amount changes each year) presented to a team nominee participant chosen as showing outstanding community leadership.

News coverage begins
The next year there were 4 teams, then 8, then 12. As the event grew, we'd added a kit to assist youths in forming their own teams, and a "Council's Challenge", and it was moved near Newmarket's Main St. with hopes of actually getting on it in order to realize the events full potential, stay truer to the "roadhockey" theme, and where it would garner more coverage, sponsorship, and ultimately attendance. These were tough objectives to achieve on a limited budget and although the event managed some sponsorship funds, always in smallish amounts, allowing for only minimal marketing. Still, the little tourney that could chugged along.

Three or Four years ago, I thought we were on our way. We'd finally convinced the Main St. businesses that having an event mid-march, in winter, attracting families to Main, was good. As well we'd set up deals with the local vendors to ensure sales by including the restaurants as options ( via tickets) for the players meals which we reimbursed them after the event. I also managed to get a page 3 Toronto Sun article written by a prominent columnist, Joe Warmington, bragging about how great a town we were for embracing it on our Main St., whilst Toronto tried to ban it.

That year we had a tough time getting excess volunteers, and when the booth tables were not delivered - as can happen when relying on volunteers - we scrambled for an alternate location to post info to, a theme which seemed to follow us the whole day. A Murphy's law year. It was fun though, and becoming what we wanted with live entertainers on the streets and inside cafes - to again assist business - and the atmosphere was great, with one of the sponsors Newmarket Mitsubishi's cars strategically placed to separate play areas. We just needed more of a budget to let more people know!

Electric sponsor in 2013
Sponsorship on a higher $ level was tough for some reason, although we had good mid-level support. For a few years I approached the Tim Horton's outside of which Newmarket's community member had died who we give an award out in homnour of, leaving a package of sponsor info for them to participate with Mike Thornhill Award, or offer out the free hot chocolate we give out but no one ever replied, and another I'd approached ,Canadian Tire, instead had started a "Start Up" type program of their own to help kids play sports.

What we needed was someone big to grab on to us - instead of the new trend of corporations trying to create their own in-house "programs" and charities.

Something for all ages
The following year we fully expected to be back on Main St. but were pushed back to the parking lot again when we received no replies to our request for repeating. Rumour had it some merchants were against events on the street, which is understandable i suppose, so off we went even though we had scads of support to remain. At any rate, it was definitely tough to get jacked up for a parking lot again after experiencing it on Main St. but we plodded on, having been sold on the new Riverwalk Commons which was to replace our former location in the parking lot. At the time of its development, we were led to believe we could ultimately play right there around the community centre, but the town's parks & rec depart wouldn't allow it for "safety" reasons and so the event remained mostly in the back parking lot.

In 2013 not one politician showed up for the event even though all locals were invited to or got back to me, including the Mayor for the past couple of years - and if not for Newmarket Councilor Joe Sponga, who took from his own budget to help pay for temporary fencing we were told we apparently needed for "safety" for the first time in 9 years at an extra cost of $700, we wouldn't have even held it!

It felt like almost nobody but the kids wanted it.

So with 2014 on the horizon and the event mired in a back parking lot again, estranged from Riverwalk Commons but with all the costs, I wondered about the feasibility of putting it on for 2014. It was tough to get sponsors excited about a back parking lot, even if it was near a community hall and outdoor stage and it's a lot of work - especially to do it semi-right - and more than volunteers alone are needed in order to organize, coordinate, and market the event properly. Then I got a call from Councillor Joe Sponga with a game saving proposal.

"What do you think about moving to the Newmarket Plaza' he'd said,

Bradford Rampage won in 2013
"Hear me out", continued he, sensing the meaning of my silence and going on to explain that there may be business development funds available for businesses development, and with construction,  Shop Davis Dr. stores have been severely affected, and therefore need something there to attract and promote business, like the road hockey event. Further, he'd already had interest from All Pro Source For Sports' store owner,  Gerry Ertl, who also has been affected by all the construction, having had to move from a visible long time location to a ' back door' location, at the back of the Newmarket Plaza And He's going to work on bringing the Stanley Cup to the event!

So we three met to get the car rolling! Gerry, below, had to move his store due to construction.

Car!!Viva Transit was also onboard Joe'd said, and could offer prime ad spot locations perhaps, and maybe dish out the free hot chocolate. The more we talked the better it sounded even though we were back in a parking lot, and as we walked the area inspecting it for feasibility, I began to get excited again..starting to visualize where things could be, and how we could include the businesses in promotions, and expand the format to include younger kids!

Former location spot for All Pro
And heck, maybe we'll even resurrect the Councilor's Challenge in some form and expand the Opening Face-Off Party to include more public attendance. Looks like The Yappers will perform and we can perhaps have sidewalk musicians performing, as well and some fun, interactive activities and I'm sure Jazzled will want to get involved!

Anyone know where we can get a "slapshot speed detector" with netting for an activity booth?

The Newmarket Plaza has been an area staple for a long time, having been the area's biggest for many years prior to the opening of the Upper Canada Mall, and it maintains a cozy small town feel to it as you stroll it's outdoor walkways, the piped out music adding to the experience. As well I have some personal attachments there, with my mom having run a store some years ago, Oscar & Felix Cookies along with my brother inlaw, and as well one of the events first sponsors, Newmarket Young Drivers of Canada, is also located in the plaza. In fact Joe Sponga, myself and others formed a non-profit group there, where we would meet often ( I chaired for 4 years) while creating and running Operation Sparrow, a forum for kids without means to play organized activities free alongside their peers.

Yes Sir, Ma'am! I needed a boost like that to get motivated and I look forward to the 2014 event at 130 Davis Drive Newmarket Plaza, and to continue to make a difference in young kids' lives, at least for one more year....

UPDATE!!!!unfortunately the Newmarket Plaza's Management nixed the idea last minute, even though the merchants were all for it. Shame.

Location will be Sat Mar 15 2014 at The Town office  -

Highlights Beatles Art Reveal and Pop69 Toronto Rock & Roll Revival Movie

I've attended a wack of gigs lately and none more exceptional than the #Pop69 Soiree held last Tuesday night, upstairs at Toronto's Hard Rock Cafe, during the peak of film festival season. With a Canadian who's who of rock and roll in attendance including Jason Paul "Cone" McCasl, music Producer, Bass guitarist and backing Vocalist of pop-punk band Sum 41 and Ian D'Sa, Producer & guitarist from Billy Talent, with a tag line inviting people to "Party like it's 1969",the bash was a smash hit; the feature highlight of the evening being an unveiling of a replica of some rare Beatles Art - the only collaborative piece ever made by all 4 Beatles - and the announcement of a documentary film, Pop69 being produced, having a historical Beatles connection.

Arriving early, a Toronto Jazz musician gave a helping hand by introducing me to the lovely H.R.C. hostess, and being the first on site representing City Vibe Contracting sponsoring the evening's food, I began to deflect a small bevvy of questions regarding the menu - wanting to feign some knowledge of the cuisine even though I hadn't a clue! Ha. I did remember a vague reference to samplings ala Yoko Ono and The Plastic Ono Band era however, so I threw that out there leaving it with, " That's all I know man" Ha. I was there to schmooze, do some P.R. and take some pics, but as for the food...the menu was still a mystery to me. Tony would be arriving soon anyway and some other "troops" too!

Chloe Rose left from Degrassi, a Rocker Chick? Who knew!?

Sure enough, he arrived shortly thereafter and I was introduced to Valerie Mcculloch of Canwood Entertainment who I was meeting in person for the first time and who turned out - to use the phraseology of the evening - to be really cool and whose relentless energy reverberated throughout the room as she seemingly tried to greet each guest personally. She makes things rock and roll for C.V.C. and over at Canwood is by all accounts an instrumental and invaluable cog in the production wheel there too.

The energy of the room seemed to intensify as the man of the hour, legendary promoter Johnny Brower arrived not too far into the evening. He seemed to genuinely enjoy greeting friends and likely some not seen in awhile. Brower, of course, was the man who persuaded John Lennon to perform at the famed Toronto Rock Revival Festival of 1969, and, in doing so, create a pivotal moment in rock history, as  Lennon would go on to play with Yoko Ono as The Plastic Ono Band separate from his Beatle's band mates for the first time in history.
One week later The Beatles were no more.

More and more people began spilling into the upstairs bar as anticipation for the unveiling grew. The music tempo kicked up a notch while the munchies made their rounds, meantime beautiful women dressed to the nines started bobbing a bit to the music as I was silently loving the idea of them posing with the famous artwork and period posters later. For the sake of art I mean. Seriously. Okay, hey, I'm a freekin' guy. Give me a break.

It was 44 years ago today, on Sept 13 1969, when John Lennon communicated a message through Eric Clapton to Johnny Brower that he'd changed his mind about Rock & Roll Revival Toronto and wasn't going to come. What exactly did Johnny say to persuade him I wondered? These are some of the rock & roll mysteries that will be unraveled in Pop69 the movie. For music history buffs this film is sure to be a hit. A chance to get a first hand look at the goings on behind the scenes, of without question, an event in the running for Canada's most important rock moment in history. Certainly, behind only Bob Dylan's first use of an electric guitar, it was 1969's most important rock moment.

What if he hadn't persuaded him? Did having Bikers escort help persuade? Would Lennon have had second thoughts & returned to play with The Beatles again? Hopefully the doc will answer a few of these questions from behind the scenes that fateful day.

As the M.C., President Gordon Weiske of CanWood, made his way up to the stage finally, people leaned in anticipation, the lights adjusting, and a small Paparazzi clamoured for the best shots. Of course, I'd been keeping an eye and hovering, making sure to be right at the front to ensure optimal coverage, but was having some issues with using one of my cameras for the first time, conveniently stuffed in my man-bag that looks suspiciously like a purse at times and slung over my shoulder, and as I juggled them, buddy next to me may have gotten an arm nudging or two, mumbling something at me in protest. C 'est la vie, I still  managed some good pretty shots out of the dozens I ruined. I just thank god it's not like in the 1969 using film and all that would have been wasted! Ha..my Scottish roots kicking in again..speaking of which..there was someone there related to Paul Mcartney I believe ..can you spot him in a pic?

Johnny Brower was officially introduced, and before pulling the cloak off, he spoke a bit about the experience of producing this historical event of 1969 - which also had on the bill in addition to Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band  The Doors, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis & Chuck Berry among some  and included Alice Cooper's debut here. No longer the brazen young 22 year old who dared to arrange this masterpiece of  rock & roll-hood alongside Kenny Walker, but  fiery as ever and with eyes ever-youthful, the excitement of his experience in putting together this momentous happening still obviously a part of his being, as his retelling oozed the same passion, I'd imagined, a youthful John Brower would have had.

As someone who has himself felt that sickly, panicky feeling in the gut when an event organized may not be going to plan, and a lot is at stake, including often your own money - and you have to portray a poker face to everyone that all is well too. I can almost envision the egads! moment when J.B. thought to approach Apple Records to have John and Yoko emcee when sponsor Eaton's Department Stores dropped out due to lagging sales the week before the event - only to have the couple make the provision that they be able to play if they hosted! Ha. Tough one there Johnny!
City Vibe sponsored food was just fab!

The unveiling itself was over in a wisp with quick a flip of the wrist, but everyone wanted a pic with the famous art replica and of Johnny B and company, followed by more nibblers and some Hard Rock refreshments. I'd like to have seen the D.J. throw some Beatles tunes and other 60's era music into the play, being that the upper level was for the #Pop69party but hey, you can't have everything! I mean....we can't all be able to break up The Beatles!  Maybe I'll bring a band next time! Ha.

The Rock & Roll Revival Pop69 Party may have been a littler bit tamer than the wild rock and roll parties of 1969 but  everyone had a blast! Ironically, I recently blogged of bringing a Beatles Fest to Newmarket and garnered interest to do so....so who knows? Another Art and Legends stop? Stay tuned!

I look forward to the 2014 movie release of POP69 and the answers to some more of these groovy, cool cat queries....stay tuned for updates! Peace out!
