Open Stage Friday's

The original new logo in 2008!
Recently while holding an event, one of the performers I'd used a few times and who's displayed some talent, communicated a desire to host an open stage or acoustical jam or something to that effect and as it happened I'd be asked to testify at a licensing hearing for a local place known to feature live entertainment. That was part of the reason however that they are in a hearing fighting for their license, because the powers that be claim - after 5 years of not mentioning it apparently - that they believe the location is not allowed any amplified music whatsoever according to their liquor license.

TPE was the original promoter and entertainment booker
I was at the original licensing hearing some years ago and my recollection is that those conditions were specific to the outside of the building only. I mean, think about it, what place is told no amplification whatsoever? That means no tv, no radio, jukebox, no stereo, no nothing because all use "amplified sound".

Meantime owner Noel was almost in tears after her hearing which ended with a remand and no decision leaving her soundless still. Told she'd had only two customers that day in her absence while at the hearing Friday, she looked at me and said,  "What am I supposed to do? I'm ruined."

Amps at PACC fundraiser @GoodTimes in 2008 now a nono
I though about "cheering her up" with some pun-like ideas - like Mime Night!..Or A Capella Night but I didn't want to confuse her...besides I had some ideas about how to turn her situation into a positive. It was early in the evening too I thought, still time for her to make something happen that night...and beyond!

This is why I thought of Good Times when Matthew's dilemma came up. The ambiance is perfect for it. He plays acoustics and sings and theoretically it could work without amps is my feeling..so why not make it so!

Voila - Friday Night Open Stage Night @ Good Times Cafe Bar & Grill.

One of the first ever TPE performers at Good Times 2007 from Nashville
After settling in a bit, the tallish Matt aka Sunbranch, played an array of originals and old covers with unique twists and turns laden into the mix - keeping that "same old, same old" definitely out which was great! At times playing with a partner, a songbird of a girl who harmonized like an angel in bluejeans and who did some cool solo covers as well, the two kept the interest and energy levels rising as the night progressed and had a cool vibe growing as it were. I look forward to more duets and trios and shaker instruments and everything else Sunbranch and friends will bring to the mix!

Youth Mural & Graffiti Artists Wanted!

Meyer's Costumes on Main (Newmarket) to host youth wall mural / Graffiti Art Contest!
Promotions and art run in my family a bit I think. When I was a kid, my mom worked part-time at Renz Dry Cleaners in the late 60's / 70's and from there had volunteered to design the floats representing the Aurora Shopping Centre where the store was located, for the town's annual July 1st and Santa Claus parades. Her repeatedly award winning designs drew the attention of the plaza owners who created a part-time position for her as the Centre's 1st Promotions Coordinator. Mom, or Mabel as she was known to everyone had a skill with art, having taught classes in our home when I was really young and later in a the tiny room inside the Aurora Community Centre. I'd attend on occasion but never really had much of a flair - except for cartooning of course! Mom would teach perspective I remember or is it prospective? I don't know, as I said I didn't pay very good attention at about 5 or 6 years of age to horizons, worm views, and other terms.  She'd always lose me at birds eye view for some reason. Ha. Thinking back, my sisters attended too, often even, if dad was working or no sibling of age could babysit. Mom treated us all like regular students though and then transferred this skill of putting to paper creative plans and ideas into fruition - whether that be a painting, a float for a parade, an ad for the newspaper, or a promotion of some sort my mom just seem to have a knack. She was tough when she had to be too, firing me her own son whom she'd hired to be Santa for the Metropolitan store, the towns largest department store then because someone said I wasn't Jolly enough! Ho! Ho! Ha! She then hired my friend.

When " The Met" was built, the L shaped Aurora Shopping Centre already existed as an outdoor merchants plaza. The new department store was to be built in the far corner from the existing plaza while sharing a common middle parking area which cemented the "bond" as a plaza. The Met was like the equivalent to a box store today you could say and, likely to stifle any negative publicity surrounding them taking this prominent location and a chunk of the plaza parking, they held an art contest on the fence walls surrounding the construction. Youths were asked to submit a plan for their "spot" I believe and allotted a place on the fence in which to do their art where two of my sisters gained entry, and which I believe my sisters Liz, now a designer of ads for major newspapers, won or placed and I believe won some money. If I recall, Liz posted a Jesus looking skyward and Gail's design looked like a man or a hobo clown peeking into a peep hole to the construction area and both won something. Ha! Although as reported in the old July 1971 edition of the old Era-Banner, Gail tied for 3rd and won the lofty sum of $10, Liz, who won $5 was always the best artist of us kids I think, except maybe Craig the youngest but it would be hard to compare her full basement wall Beatles drawings to Craigy's Star Wars-like art, which he too won at the Aurora Art Show with one year, and recently designed / launched a video game.
Mom Mabel and two sisters Gail and Liz who's artwork made it onto an art contest construction fence back in 1971. They still look the same.
My other Sister Gail whose design had also gained entry to the wall contest became a Publisher with Mclean Hunter Publishing ( now Rogers publishing) having risen from sales through to Editor of Art Impressions Magazine, as well was the longtime Publisher for Canadian Interior Design Magazine, taking it from an obscure publication to a respected and valuable ( Mcleans sold it) asset along with her now husband Pete and some other dedicated employees. The two of them and another long time employee at Mcleans then went on to take over independent ownership and publishing rights to Art Impressions. Even my other, other sister Karen became involved in the creative side through her flair for photography becoming a portraits photographer.

My daughter Brittany, with a little creative guidance from myself and  Artist Fred Joly who provided the cartoonizing mechanism that turned our " Grapes" (actually me impressioning Don Cherry) into an " Uncle Sam Wants You!-Like figure for the poster designed to "recruit" players for a tourney! I've had a lot of people old and young alike comment about the poster and it was very effective with the event filling up with entries in record time this year!
Daughter Brit has talent too
Mom would go on to sell (and design her own) ads to local Newmarket, Aurora and area merchants for a number of publications including " The Topic" and " Bradford Witness" publications. Eventually mom caught the eye of Peter Miller who was the owner operator of all the Macdonald's Restaurants in the area at the time and who created a position to hire her on full time as the Promotions Director for all 4 of his stores! When mom's dad died Mr. Miller paid her flight home and gave her a month off with pay. Mom would later sit on the Aurora Chamber of Commerce Board o f Directors for many years. She even named Newmarket's " Quaker Hill Market Place" in a contest to name it which stands today - although she entered in my embarrassed dad's name and he is in the newspaper pic accepting the winning $250 cheque back then! Ha, poor dad.

Why is any of this relevant? Well we're going to help launch a youth mural art contest July 1st open to youth entries only and it brought back all these memories of that fence surrounding Metropolitan and how proud I'd been to go by and see my sisters' artwork there every time I went by it and of my Mom and how amazing she was back then to be able to use her art and make a mountain out of a molehill and a career from nothing.Oh yea sorry, same thing! Ha!
Meyers Costume's wall now clear of graffiti below as ordered by town with top part next to be done. A Mural Art Contest with a resulting full wall mural hopes to end repeated 'tagging" costs to the long time store owner.
Myer's Costumes on Main's owner, whose wall is to be the mural and who tells me they've been there for 80 years as Newmarket's oldest (family owned?) business, remembers Mabel from over the years - and I myself remember her from riding my bike there as a kid all the way from Aurora, as back then Myer's was the best place around for candy not costumes...and she'd give you a deal too, with everything from Black Cat gum, to wax lips, to black balls and it appears she may need our help now.

The business (and home) has been deluged with graffiti from some "kids" likely, who don't realize that they are intruding not only on an elderly woman's business, but her bread and butter too, as well as potentially her staff's and in turn their families. This, coupled with times as they are, such as town bylaws allowing for temporary use of nearby vacant stores and parking lot type trailer sales of Halloween goods during her busiest season, makes it tough for them right now including having to clean up all the wall graffiti as ordered by the town which her manager was able to do mostly and how long will it last tag free?.

Producing a "cool" piece on that wall will lend itself to being left at peace whilst adding enhancement to the north end of Main St...So we all win!

In order to assist this longtime local independent business woman who's energy levels may be low but not out - and perhaps the youth and even to some town folk who may not see a need for youth having a place to show creative "art" via mural or graffiti-art-like displays - we need to nurture an idea that embraces a solution. As brazen an act as the graffiti was to this victims business, I think by including youth via a contest that allows for a mural art event held on the Main St locations wall, along with some music and hot dogs for sale to the public to raise funds for some worthy causes including a winner's prize, makes for a good day...and society! The winning artist can then lead the design for the final full wall mural which will become the final wall adornment with their signature!
This old now unused bridge has been a hangout for youths at least since I was a kid!
Some people know that I have for some time advocated for such a spot for youth to be able to showcase some of this special talent - mentioning the unused old bridge that youth have claimed as their own since I was a kid (and sneaking beers and cigarettes on top and under it from time to time. Sorry mom!) and later on generations got into graffiti-ing and..well some still drink probably beer or smoke on occasion at 4am there when no parent will have them I'm sure! At any rate I'd thought this old bridge a good spot for the youth to be able to "art" up, and still do, but right now Meyers Costumes one of Newmarket's oldest businesses and which misses out on most any spill-over business from Main St events being so removed from the south end, needs our help!

So what happened to me you ask? Good question! But hey! I did win a contest this year which was a Canada-wide one minute ad contest put on to depict the growing gap in Canada which I entered for P.A.C.C and it won the group $2,000 as voted online as the best. P.A.C.C. then used the funds towards their youth road hockey event. So Yea, maybe we have some promo smarts in this family, but alas, we still need you all to come out and BE AN ARTIST or Donate a Prize or supplies or buy a hot dog, hamburg, bring some music or sound equipment or be a guest dj, jammer, or man a BBQ spot to help pull this off with panache on July 1st - Canada Day!

Make this the stop YOUTH make on Canada Day!@

Canadian Tradition bites the curb in Newmarket

Every now and then you just have to stop and give your head a shake. Like recently our request to once again have our annual youth road hockey event held on Main St in Newmarket, which it was last year for the first time in its 8 soon to be 9 year history, was apparently turned down. Actually, I don't even think it was even raised. Why, I'm not sure, but I do know they managed to okay closing the street for some kind of Bollywood celebration as well as a multicultural or international festival, but seems to me the very Canadian tradition of road hockey was not considered important enough.

So instead the youths of Newmarket, Bradford, Aurora and wherever else they come from this year will have to play on substandard areas too small really for quality play. The location they will now be forced to use is too narrow for passing and too close to the next playing area unless we come up with a last minute solution. Of course the outdoor stage of the new " Riverwalk Commons" for comedy play-by-play and performers will be nice and we can facet a play area for younger non-tourney players there, but really nearby stones throw Main St is where it's at for road hockey.

We'll pull this off, but I'm extremely disappointed that the downtown association apparently doesn't deem this event, with the potential to grow ginormous, important enough or worthy enough. It's not enough I guess that the longest running annual road hockey tourney in Ontario allows kids to participate for free, feeds all tourney players and also gives out a $1,000 education award  to one worthy youth. Heck, last year we even reimbursed the Main St restaurants $5 each for feeding kids and put free entertainment in their cafes. They loved us. So what happened? Hmmmm..( picture me thinking here)

Given the attention and support all the other events seem to get like Hoe Downs - which by the way Aurora was never a country music town - and the "multicultural festival" start-ups, this one should have been a no - brainer years ago to get behind, yet here we are today with a sub-standard solution to a very worthy and marketable event, and a few people calling the shots about its location.

All the businesses I've spoken with were/are happy to have it on their street and were surprised it was even an issue as it brought some business on a winter Saturday and was a good community event - they welcomed it in fact - yet it wasn't even raised alongside these upstart events that garnered support  - such as the " Car Show Thursdays" and this "Bollywood" festival idea. Listen I have nothing against Bollywood , but really what connection does it have to Newmarket? What history? Road Hockey has plenty and is a Canadian youth tradition! And you'd be surprised how many "multicultural" kids come play!
Tradition got to Main St in 2011 sadly left out in  2012 so far
Too bad, it's one Canadian tradition I hoped this town would be a leader in embracing - such as the page 3 column written by Toronto Sun Columnist Warmington last year commending the town for embracing road hockey while Toronto try to ban it. I thought then they could see the value - not only as good thing for youths - but to grow into an attraction on a day in the middle of winter attracting business downtown. I guess they spoke too soon. Hopefully someone comes to their senses by March 17. Or perhaps try the Bollywood festival outside in March and see how many people it draws!

Thank goodness for our returning sponsors, some of who are right on Main St where we should be playing and who are still supporting through entry level sponsorships helping keep this worthy event alive, even though it is not actually right on Main now. And a big welcome to Newmarket Mitsubishi who know about community responsibility, as well as a good thing when they see it and without whose sponsorship this year we could not have had an event, especially with a last minute pull out of a cosponsor of the Mike Thornhill Memorial Education Award given to a youth player deemed a leader in the community... and having to explain to sponsors about the move. Game on!

Rockin Deli Night Sat Feb 25
Building towards two events at once can be a bit of a juggling act, especially if you are by nature a bit of a perfectionist. Right now among some projects, we are a little behind in launching our "screener" for a documentary for which I hate missing deadlines, even if they are my own self imposed ones. I'm behind because I put off firming up the host band for our "Open Stage" portion of Rockin' Deli Night which concludes with a DJ and the latest in dance. But I'd had some discussions with Newmarket 's THE JAMSPOT owner and operator Max -  and wanting to keep things local as I know there is a ton of talent here - had confidence Max would turn me on to the right hosts given time. Gulp..but I was running out!

Max is a consummate pro too, not wanting to recommend just anyone, and taking the time to understand what I was looking for. But I think he also realizes that we can work together here and create a cooperative  atmosphere with enough rooms for everyone to play in whether they are jamming or putting on live shows. THE JAMSPOT can also hold smaller shows as well and is ideal for CD Release parties too, but THE JAMSPOT's  big feature is the custom built sound proofing built in. Bands love it for good reason. And they are going to love playing at Deli house Caterings Rockin' Deli Night location at 1220 Stellar Dr in Newmarket as well, as it renowned for its good sound as it's original build use was for a concert hall for big name acts way back in the 50's and 60's. Later on it was also a succession of night clubs including " Club Spotlight" which featured the latest in lights and booming city-like sound for the time. Rockin' Deli Night takes a walk back into that era and even offers prime rib as dinner - optional of course!

Funny story. I was writing a column, " At The Clubs", for CoverStory Newspaper in York Region back in the day and one night while covering a band at none other than the Rockin' Deli located on Yonge St in Newmarket, I was attacked by about 4 or 5 guys outside. They jumped me in the parking lot for, as far as I could tell, wearing leather pants! That's just a theory mind you as I was new to living here then having spent the previous 10 years or so living in cities, so pleated leather pants may not have resonated with some locals - a fact that was pointed out to me by none other than a local! ha! I'd never have thunk it. I still have the pants somewhere, scrapes and all! Ha! Anyway these guys were so drunk they couldn't sustain any damage, as whenever they went to kick me I'd roll their friend who was now lying on the ground with me (from tackling me) in front of the kick! Ha..I got hit a few times though and the doorman watched the whole thing from inside not bothering to do or say anything. Afterwards they let me in to recoup and several years later I dated the bartender who had been working that night as she remembered the incident when I relayed it to her...I should have known better when she did nothing as these guys attacked me that night, that she'd be, er ah ...interesting. She went on to have a Glass Tiger member's kid..oh well..that one's another story for another day. Ha! Now who I should have gone after was my flaxen haired co-worker Mcgurksky or something like that who had showed sympathy for me and who also was a single parent at the time like me. Her and two other girls were like the Charlies Angels sales force on the CoverStory YR team, and likely sold the jaw-dropping men ads before uttering a word. Mgoo was beautiful and hard working, but one of those women who leave you tongue tied whenever you tried to say anything to her, let alone make a play. Man, what an idiot I was. Why did I pick her to be the "nice guy" to! Ha!

At any rate Max came through with some outstanding musicians to host the first Rockin' Deli Night on Sat Feb 25 called Sean Bourke Band! The trio's members have played with a number of bands over the years - some having played alongside The Good brothers or The Goods as once known - ironically through a time period when I interviewed the band for a TV show I produced and Co-hosted called "Out and About" - and Teenage Head to name a couple so the array of tunes they can play will be phenomenal, and any vocalists or accompanying "Jammers" can get in on the action! Everyone knows I like a good show and this one is a shaping up!

Speaking of shaping up, the 8th Annual Friendly Neighbourhood Youth Road Hockey Challenge is shaping up with the new addition of Newmarket Mitsubishi as tournament sponsor! The now longest running street hockey tournament in Ontario features live entertainment, music, comedy play-by-play with TP's own "Gripes" as featured in the poster campaign.

This year's TP imposed theme slogan for the road hockey event is

WE WANT YOU! BACK ON THE STREETS!

And uses a Don Cherryesque character dressed in Canadian red and white stripes and mirrors the US army recruitment poster for "Uncle Sam".

The 2012 event will be held again in the downtown Newmarket area including spots around the Newmarket Community Centre and the new Riverwalk Commons. With public skating already an attraction there we expect the road hockey activities to take off in a big way for 2012 and plan to utilize the outdoor stage for live entertainment for a "halftime show' and for the end of the event shows, including a variety of talent. We may maintain an open stage during the event combined with our canned music, but either way it'll be a fun event!
This year youths can sign up for the free event online as well in advance @ www.tpeproductions.com
Pick up games and an Opening Face-off Party for us Oldtimers too T.B.A.!
