Help! Ontario Festival Mania Guide

Be careful during festival season
Collingwood, Ontario has long now been renowned for its Elvis Festival, this year July 23-26, and in fact I performed there and competed a few years back. Another story for another day. Let's just say they entered me in the wrong category. Lol. But I do recall being intrigued by the pop-up Elvis paraphernalia shops, and street corner side-burns selling vendors, and the general atmosphere that grasped the theme and embraced it. As I'd walked around town in my Elvis attire I frickin felt like Elvis the way I was treated, feeling an obligation almost to stay in character, at one time having a group of dozens of visiting Japanese tourists wanting a group shot. It was maniacal!

TPElvis
There all types of festivals, themed after as many themes as you can imagine, Blues, Jazz, Comedy, but in the end the most imaginative, and ones that best stick to a theme with a broad range of possible attendees win out. They will attract the better acts long run and that in turn will grow attendance.

And no one type is immune to losing its perch either. The (Toronto) Beaches Jazz Festival, this year being held July 10-26, has never again reached its lofty attendee perch once attained although they are hanging in there, and the always edgy EdgeFest is a hanger onner event still.

Going north, Aurora has a seemingly endless festival season also including a Jazz, Winter Blues and annual outdoor BBQ Ribs Festival which includes top notch entertainment while Barrie has its Kempenfest July 31 - Aug 3.

Newmarket also has its TD Jazz+ Festival upcoming July 31, 1, 2, 3 and it's grown in leaps and bounds since its inception a few years ago. Adding the + has opened it up to a broader range of music and talent, and kept skeptics of it not being a jazz festival, like me originally, at bey.

Markham had their festival June 19, 20 while Unionville's was June 4, 5, 6, however their Thursday night's Music in the Park by Unionville Presents, sports a superb level of talented, mostly clone type acts, including recently The Caverners who cover The Beatles.

The Caverners did a superb job with their 60's mop top era version of The Beatles on this night, and looking around at the diverse crowd, including diversity in ages, one could envision an entire festival around them. People just couldn't sit still, and the on-stage persona of the talented band helped perpetuate the mystical feeling. Their suberb vocal abilities and spot on instrument play, along side the lookalike factor, sure made for a great time. Orillia Ontario has recognized the potential, hosting a competing festival with Collingwood's Elvis Fest, with a Beatle mania type event, July 24, 25, 2 6 in 2015. The whole strip gets into it including a store dedicated to The Beatles and stages featuring some top Beatles-like performers. As John might say, "Imagine that!"
Adorning, what else, a tax place!

BeatleMAINia Possibilities!

Imagine on top of a headliner that an entire Main St is wrapped in this theme now - street vendors in theme, shopkeepers, yoga booths, leather, crafts, art, aboriginal, 60's collectables, genre T-shirts, records, local bars becoming the famous Cavern Club for a night...it's endless...and exciting!

Watch for TPE updates on BeatleMAINia 2016!

Newmarket Music Promoter Maurice Weeks Live Entertainment Nights

The life of a promoter or show event coordinator or record label evolves constantly, and a real promoter is always looking to do something bigger, and so when a good promoter is filling their venues to capacity with patrons, the natural progression is to find something bigger to put them into. That's the predicament event and music promoters / record label Arthur Jr Music, led by Arthur Weeks aka talented Hip Hop singer Maurice Weeks, along with partner / compatriot Dan Barker of 90 Nickel Entertainment, is experiencing right now. But these are growing pains of the excellent kind.

Let's face it, the ultimate for someone inclined to put live rock & roll, hip hop and other cool genre laiden shows together is to do bigger and better each time. Just look at the progression of rock concerts over the years. I actually had the honour recently of interviewing Johnny Brower, one of the guys who organized and promoted the first ever multi day concerts who happens also to be the same fellow who organized The Toronto Rock & Roll Revival concert of 1969 - the first ever concert John Lennon performed apart from the Beatles, and widely believed by those in the know as being the catalyst that broke them up. Hey, what can I say, that's who I hang with when they are producing the Pop69 movie about him. Ha. The irony of having driven around with the legendary icon a few months back and now being out with an eager group of young up and comer wannabe legends didn't escape me.

I tried to mention it to the three who'd accompanied me on the little road trip, including another indy records and entertainment Producer Carly Myers of ILLBROKEN (IB) Entertainment, while showing a potential site for an indoor / outdoor gig that holds up to 1000 people, but I think it was maybe too much at the time to take in as they were way loving the venue and already wondering aloud about the how to's and what if's.

Anyway, the 1st idea was to bring some kind of headliner in to cap off a day of bands including showcasing local bands who have stood out in band wars and Talent Search competitions. So it would showcase not only a top notch headlining act, but some very cool other bands as well.

TPE could perhaps hook in some great food from a couple of local businesses and a beer tent to seal the deal, and the event would have all the fixings of a fun time. TPE's been looking for someone that fits this bill for these types of venues to work on the entertainment side and believe these guys fit that bill way well. They also combine to have a tremendous following and combine that with the fact they have also brought some great new talent to the stage in Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Aurora and Markham too and are always looking to develop talent and introduce the coolest in music trends through their events, which I'm digging, and you get a recipe for a great time.

Maurice tells me they just signed an exciting rapper artist to the label  also known to do little genre blending which is cool and maybe what the music festival will be come about.. a festival of merging rock, rap and hip hop styles..thrown in amongst some traditional styles - A celebration of Rock Music history if you will!...So stay tuned for sum of dat shit y'mean!? It's all rock & roll to me.Ha.

These guys are at the ground level forefront of the music scene today - just like Johnny Brower was in his and am excited to see this show to completion and what kind of talent line up these guys put together should so stay tuned!

....With a hip, hop, a hippity hippity hop, and a hip, hop, hippityhophop!
